After this was done, patient HM could not retain any new memories due to the damage done to his hippocampus in the brain. Later in his life at age 25, he got surgery to recover from that accident, but the doctors accidentally cut part of his hippocampus. His name was Henry Molaison, and when he was 9 years old he got in an accident. An event that helped these scientists understand how memories are processed was in 1952, with a man known as patient HM. The first thing these scientists needed to understand was how memories were created, destroyed/altered, and how long term and short term memories differ. The first theory I will be talking about is the neuroscience theory of memory. Stick around if you’d like to hear more about both of these theories! To do this, they must look at both perspectives the biological theory, or the neuroscience theory, and the cognitive psychological theory. In order for these scientists to input this data into a machine, they have to completely understand how memories are stored, processed, and recalled. Deep learning is like trying learn memories through data representations rather than task specific algorithms. A little bit scary to think about, but it is what scientists need to do in order to keep improving. Researchers studying deep learning use memory modeling, which is studying human memory to try and input the way we process memories into a machine. Deep learning is a form of artificial intelligence, or AI. The article started out by introducing the idea of “deep learning” to the audience. After reading the article for this week, I thought this was easily one of the most interesting topics yet. Today I will be writing my fifth blog so far for my psychology class.
